Granfondo-style cycling is a personal cycling challenge with timing via electronic chip for non-professional and recreational cyclists. The event is open to everyone but promotes amateur, or non-professional, cycling. This means that professional cyclists, or former professionals who have retired from pro cycling less than one year before the date of a granfondo event, can only ride the granfondo 'out of competition', i.e. they will not feature in the result list nor receive any prizes. These cyclists are also expected not to influence the outcome of the competition and restrict themselves to defensive riding
Definition of a ‘professional cyclist’: People who are currently professional cyclists will not be part of the race competition, should there be prizes in a granfondo event. A professional cyclist is a person whose name features on the official team list of a UCI licensed World Tour, Pro Continental or Continental Team, or an ELITE MTB team or UCI MTB team. The team rosters and names of riders are available on the website of the UCI, the International Cycling Federation. There can therefore be no discussion. Note that top amateur riders who are hired as occasional guestriders for any of the aforementioned team categories are not considered professionals and can therefore compete in granfondo event.
Participants are expected to be between the age of 18-65 for insurance reasons. People outside this range should first contact us via email
Registration is open for everyone of all nationalities, religious, social or ethnic backgrounds
Since the 2003 Stockholm Consensus on Sex Reassignment in Sports, there has been a growing recognition of the importance of autonomy of gender identity in society, as reflected in the laws of many jurisdictions worldwide. Trans athletes (male to female and female to male) are welcome to take part in our Granfondo cycling events, as are athletes with DSD. However, as most of our events offer race results and related to that prizes and prizemoney, fair competition must be ensured and we therefore follow the guidelines set by the International Olympic Committee (link: https://stillmed.olympic.org/Documents/Commissions_PDFfiles/Medical_commission/2015-11_ioc_consensus_meeting_on_sex_reassignment_and_hyperandrogenism-en.pdf ) . Especially trans athletes who transition from male to female need to be aware of the conditions for participation in actual competition. Trans athletes and DSD athletes are kindly requested to contact the race director of the event following registration to avoid any potential issues during the event. The person in question will handle the registration with discretion and according to the IOC guidelines - not because we necesarily agree with those guidelines, but because we are not in a position to re-invent the wheel.
People can sign up for all stages or for single stages. The number of full tour participants on the long distance is capped at 1000 riders. It is possible to change from long to short distance before the start of a stage if you notify the time-keeping team in advance, bearing in mind that you will not be ranked in the general classification if you do so. We encourage people who do long distance to sign up early if you wish to do all stages and be ranked in the general classification.
Registration is personal and cannot be transferred to any other person.
it is possible to sign up as a team. A team must consist of minimum five riders and riders can be a mix of men and women. Specific regulations for the team classification, which only takes into account the long distance and not the short distance races, can be read in the event regulations of each specific event. In Yunnan, three of the five team riders must score a finish time in each stage in order to obtain a ranking as a team.
Event registration goes in two periods: an early bird period with limited discounted race fees, and a regular period with standard race fees.
